The Angry Atheist

It may seem a bit strange for an Atheist to be asking the question “Who is GOD?”. But, hopefully, by the time you are done reading this passage you will have a better understanding as to why I even begun to ask the question.

Beginning to understand “GOD”

WikiPedia (because it’s trustworthy) defines “GOD” as the following:

“God is a deity in theistic and deistic religions and other belief systems, representing either the sole deity in monotheism, or a principal deity in polytheism.”

In the past “GOD” has taken on many forms. You have:

-”Ra”, the sun God;

-”Saturn”, the God of harvest;

-”Ubusuna-gami”, God of Birth;

and so many more. In fact, for just about everything that you can think of there was a GOD for it and each time GOD was referred too as a different name (assuming that these were all the same GOD, which the argument can be made that they were).

Who is GOD too an Atheist?

In Atheism, “GOD” is the answer too what we have yet to understand. For the same reason that the sun GOD existed, one can argue that for each thing that we did not understand in the past, we attributed a GOD too it. For instance, we don’t know how the crops grow, we therefore pray too and make sacrifices too “Saturn” in the hopes that he/she/it will provide us with a good harvest this year.

As time went on and we began to understand how crops grew we became less and less dependent on “Saturn” for help and the goats rejoiced. As did the local virgins.

Now any talk of a harvest GOD named “Saturn” would be looked upon as ridiculous and we could argue the facts against there being such a GOD because we now understand how to grow crops on our own. In other words, the more we learned, the less GOD existed.

As a human being I can honestly sit here and tell you that I do not know everything. I am not a scientist so I can’t answer questions about evolution or why I believe more in it then I do in creationism. What I CAN sit here and tell you is that more and more people are beginning to go against GOD (currently 15 percent of Americans don’t believe in GOD, up from 8 percent just 10 years ago). But why the growing number of people turning away from GOD?

It could be the whole “Priest/boy love” thing. It could be the whole “Christmas has become very commercialised” thing. It could be the whole “religion in politics” thing. It could be that people are beginning to see that religion is becoming less and less important in every day life.

It could be for any number of reasons. But whatever the reason may be, we are beginning to believe that GOD has nothing to do with what we see and experience every day of our lives, that “miracle” is just another word for “GOD”, which is just another way of saying “I don’t know”.

At some point GOD will not exist at all. The more we learn and the more we understand how things work the less GOD will be the answer to the question. And where will we be then?

How will the world respond too there being no GOD? Some have called for doomsday, saying that GOD is what gives us our morals and values. That without GOD there will only be chaos. I tend to think otherwise. I’m an atheist and I have no inclination to kill someone or rob someone. I don’t want to cause anyone harm or reap havoc across the globe. And I am sure that I am not the only Atheist who is this way.

Of course, the next question that people ask is “well, where did you get your morals and values?”. My answer to that question is “I get them from common sense. Using my brain to come to logical conclusions about what is right and what is wrong.” I am not a selfish person. In fact, if the opportunity presents itself and if I can afford to do so, I am a very giving person. I am kind hearted and can make people who just met me feel easy enough to tell me their deepest darkest secrets, things that their best friends don’t even know about.

I guess you could say that I have a better chance of getting into heaven then most people because I’m not being nice so that I may gain something out of it in the end. I am being nice just to be nice.

So this leads me to ask some questions of you folks, who ever you may be:

1) Who is “GOD”?

2) Why have so many people begun to turn away from GOD?

3) What will happen if GOD no longer existed?

4) In 50 years the number of people who don’t believe in GOD will be at 50% (given the current rate of 7% per ten years). This percentage is bound to grow at a much faster rate at that point, possibly reaching 95% or more by the turn of the century. What do you predict will happen to society at 20%, 40% and then at 80%?

While I may not believe in GOD, I do see the benefit of there at least being someone who you can’t see but threatens to throw you into a pit of fire for eternity. So it goes without saying that while I may NOT believe in GOD, if you DO then please continue to do so. Not only will you help society remain moral, you will also give me more people to make fun of for believing in the invisible man… you silly people you.
